This system is in particular best suited for polymers and small particles (1 - 100 nm) and for samples with low concentrations of nanoparticles (< 1 mg/L).  
 

Postnova Sedimentation / Centrifugal - Field Flow Fractionation (CFFF or SedFFF). Continuous fractionation of nanoparticles from 10 nm – 1 µm and density > 1g/cm³ according to their buoyant mass (diameter and density difference to carrier medium). Detection of particles with Agilent 1200 and 1260 UV-DAD and fluorescent detectors, online static and dynamic light scattering (Wyatt DAWN EOS or Heleos2) and ICP-MS (Agilent 7900 or 8800).

Eyetech (Ambivalue): particle analysis combining a laser and a video channel. Particle size distributions are measured based on laser obscuration time measurement principle. Shape analyses, concentration and surface area can also be derived. Operating range: 0.6-3600 µm. Magnetic, mechanical and flow through cells.    

PostNova F1000: Symmetric Flow-Field Flow Fractionation. Original design of Prof. Calvin Giddings and FFFractionation Utah (US) with improvements. Continuous fractionation of particles from 1 nm to 1 µm based on hydrodynamic principles. Detection of particles with UV-DAD detector, 3D-fluorescence detector, differential refractive index detector, on-line static and dynamic light scattering (Wyatt Dawn EOS) and ICP-MS (Perkin Elmer Elan 6100). Provides a physical separation of particles, determination of particle size distributions, main and trace element size distributions, particle shape distributions, molecular conformation of polymers and branching ratios. This system features two HPLC pumps to maintain symmetric cross-flow conditions without re-circulating the cross-flow. This prevents the contamination of the sample in the channel by re-introducing sample components smaller than the accumulation membrane size cut-off through the upper frit. This system is in particular best suited for medium to large nanoparticles (10 - 1000 nm) and for samples with higher concentrations of nanoparticles (> 10 mg/L).    

Quantachrome Nova 2000 e-series: specific surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution measurements based on N2 and CO2 physisorption.  

Malvern ZetaSizer Nano: Determination of molecular weight, hydrodynamic radius and zeta-potential. Based on dynamic light scattering at large angle (back-scattering, hydrodynamic radius) or 90° (molecular weight) and laser-doppler anemometry (zeta-potential). Additionally equipped with a multi-purpose titrator for the determination of zeta-potential and particle size (simultaneously) as a function of pH or ionic strength. Working range 3 nm - 3 µm (1 µm with mineral particles, 0.7 µm with iron-oxides), detection limits depending on particle size but typically < 1 mg/L.   

Galai CIS-1: determination of particle-number based particle size distributions based on laser-light shading/obscuration. Significantly lower detection limits than MS2000 (~ 1 mg /L), working range 0.5 µm - 300 µm.   

Malvern MasterSizer 2000 with HydroS (180 mL) and micro-Precision (18 mL) dispersing units: particle sizing based on light scattering and diffraction. Working range: 0.02 µm to 2000 µm (theoretical); 100 nm - 1 mm (practical) at concentrations down to ~ 100 mg/L. Enables the determination of particle-volume based size distributions, aggregation behaviour and aggregation kinetics as well as the characterization of aggregate formation (RLA or DLA) and the aggregates fractal dimensions.   

Wyatt Technology DawnEOS laser light scattering photometer. Used in conjuction with Field Flow Fractionation or size exclusion chromatography for the on-line determination of molecular and particle properties as molecular weight, RMS radius and hydrodynamic radius. Batch operation possible with batch conversion kit. 30 mW laser source at 690 nm, observation of scattered light at 18 angles (static light scattering) and dynamic light scattering observed at 100° angle (APD detector and ALV 5000 auto-correlator-board).   

Turbiscan LABExpert (Formulaction): Determination of the dispersion state of dispersions, emulsions etc..Transmission and backscattering detector. Particle migration can be followed by scanning the total height of the sample. The Expert version includes thermoregulation and models to compute physical parameters such as the dispersion state or the particle diameter.    

Fluoromax-4 (HORIBA Scientific): Spectrofluorometer equipped with auto-titrator unit F3006 and Fiber-Optics adapter FM4-3000.    

SurPASS (Anton Paar): Electrokinetic Analyzer for solid samples. Zeta potential determination is based on the measurement of streaming potential and streaming current. Equipped with the Cylindrical Cell used for e.g., granular samples, coarse particles, or fibres (particle size >25 µm), and the Adjustable Gap Cell used for small samples with a rectangular shape e.g., membranes (20x10 mm, thickness <2 mm).
